Spring has finally arrived and that means it’s time to update your wardrobe! Because I believe that you should love what you own, I turned to style guru, Tania Sterl, owner of style consulting company Sterl on Style in NYC to find out what this spring’s must-haves are to help you make sure you look your best this season and to help you figure out what you actually have in your closet before you hit the stores.
While it can be hard to make decisions when sorting through clothing, if you don’t know what you have, you can miss out on looking your best. So, rather than letting you look drab and boring because that amazing dress you just bought got lost in the vortex that is your closet, use these spring fashion tips from Sterl to make the most out of your closet and your wallet this season.
1. Identify your power and core pieces.
Power pieces are your coat, purse and shoes. Core pieces are your jacket, dress and pants. Look for classic, timeless pieces in neutral colors that fit you well and you enjoy wearing. These are the key parts of your first impression on the world and you want to make sure you look amazing at all times.
2. Organize your closet by events.
If you have the space, try organizing your closet by what events you normally wear them to such as work, sports, casual, special occasion, etc. Organizing your closet this way will actually help you make quicker decisions on what to wear because it helps limit choices that aren’t appropriate for the occasion. You can further sort these categories by item, such as shirts, pants and skirts.
3. See them/wear them.
If you can’t see what you have, you can’t find it and therefore you can’t wear it. Hang up your dresses, coats, blouses and nice work shirts in your closet. Invest in quality hangers that keep your clothing from falling off and save you space. This means no wire hangers ever. You can fold jeans, pants, shirts and active wear and put them in a drawer. Place like things together. Make sure your accessories are not piled on top of one another so you can easily find and add just the right about of pop to make your outfit complete.
4. Know what’s trending.
Going through your closet allows you to see what you have and what you need. Knowing in advance what colors and styles work best for the season will enable you to make smart decisions while organizing or shopping. Trending colors this spring are inspired from nature: bone, stone, turquoise and corral as well as spring-like greens and pinks to bring out the feminine side in you.
Prints and patterns will enable you to make a bold statement, especially on a dress. For accessories, metallic is now the new “neutral” and can add a little shine to any look from casual to dressy. Lastly, 30s, 40s and 50s styles are showing back up and are perfect for women with curves and to find those styles Tania suggests you check out your local thrift shop to see what gems you can find!
Sterl stresses that the most important thing is to know who you are so that you can pick the style statement that truly fits you. Trench coats are huge this spring, so if you’re into vintage, look for a coat with a rounded collar, for the sporty adventurous person, a parka type trench may work best while a classic with a twist gal may prefer a Burberry trench in a new trending color.
Now that you’re armed with the tools to tackle your closet, give yourself about four hours twice a year (spring and fall) to organize your wardrobe. To make it fun, put on your favorite tunes and go in with the mindset that this process is like shopping but with no lines and no money needed.
